Snorkeling on Adeaar

Go ashore to sample the local village life. Friendly, smiling children are all around playing under houses built on stilts. Walk along the path lined with living fences, to the local waterfall. Stop in for a look around the local school. Witness trees filled with flying foxes hanging in masses with wings carefully folded around their young ones. At dusk, watch as they take flight, silhouetted against the sunset, heading to the mainland, in search of their evening meal. Visit the only place on earth where prehistoric dragons roam. Make a wish at the wishing trees, along the shore of a volcanic lake. Kayak over crystal clear water in a quiet bay. Try your skills with our Stand-Up-Paddle boards. Snorkel at the base of an active volcano. Have a massage with hot stones warmed by volcanic gases.

Life at sea can be good! Once your journey comes to an end, we organize the seaplane to fly in to collect you and your friends from Adelaar, and fly you back to the island of Bali.

Climb & Cruise Mt Tambora
with Adelaar

“Mount Tambora, is an active stratovolcano in the northern part of Sumbawa, one of the Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia. Tambora is known for its major eruption in 1815. It was formed due to the active subduction zones beneath it, and before the eruption of 1815, it was more than 4,300 metres (14,100 feet) high, making it then one of the tallest peaks in the Indonesian archipelago.

The large magma chamber under Tambora had been drained by pre-1815 eruptions and underwent several centuries of dormancy as it refilled. Volcanic activity reached a peak that year, culminating in the eruption. With a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 7, the eruption was the most devastating in recorded history. The explosion was heard on Sumatra island, more than 2,000 kilometres (1,200 miles) away. Heavy volcanic ash rains were observed as far away as Borneo, Sulawesi, Java and Maluku islands, and the maximum elevation of Tambora was reduced from about 4,300 metres (14,100 ft) to 2,850 metres (9,350 feet). Although estimates vary, the death toll was at least 71,000 people. The eruption caused global climate anomalies in the following years, while 1816 became known as the “year without a summer” due to the impact on North American and European weather. In the Northern Hemisphere, crops failed and livestock died, resulting in the worst famine of the century.

During a 2004 excavation, archaeologists discovered the remains of a house destroyed and buried by the 1815 eruption. The site has remained intact beneath three metres of pyroclastic deposits and provides insight into the culture that vanished. Today, Mount Tambora is closely monitored for volcanic activity; a powerful eruption would affect millions of Indonesians. The mountain is administered by the Bima Regency in the northeast and by the Dompu Regency in the west and south.”

Climb & Cruise with Adelaar
Adelaar - Mt Tambora itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to Adelaar
The meeting point will be at the Main Passenger Jetty in Serangan Harbor at 8:30 AM, where our crew are standing by to welcome you. As soon as everyone is aboard, we depart Serangan and move along the coastline of Bali, cruising overnight to Satonda Island. We hope for a magnificent sunset over Bali’s majestic Mt Agung. In the afternoon, we will make a stop in Nusa Lembongan where you can dive, snorkel, or do any water activity. We recommend the snorkelling site of Coral garden & easy dive site of Mangrove.

Day 2: Satonda Island, Sumbawa
Arrival at Satonda Island will be late morning, with two dives scheduled along a sloping reef. Satonda is an ancient  volcanic island, said to be even older than Tambora, with a salt water lake that fills the crater. Don’t miss a chance to cast your wish at the wishing trees along the lakes edge! There is time for swimming, snorkeling or diving in the bay. Alternate water activities include, Stand Up Paddle and kayaking. At sunset we witness thousands of fruit bats departing the island for the mainland. They fill the sky, with their translucent wings silhouetted against the sunset. We spend the night anchored in the bay.

Day 3: Mt Tambora, Sumbawa
Adelaar departs early morning for the harbor of Calabai on the south coast of Sumbawa. Breakfast is at 6:00 AM and then it is off to shore at 7:00 AM to meet up with your Tambora trekking team. The sleeping Mt Tambora, has been mostly forgotten for years. Completely off the beaten path, she awaits the intrepid traveler who perhaps knows of her violet past. Erupting in April of 1815, she exploded with such a force the sound was heard all the way to Jakarta. The resulting aftermath was catastrophic and caused a year of darkness in the Archipelago. Those who did not die in the explosion or the tsunami, succumbed to starvation. The ash cloud was so dense it prevented sunlight from reaching the earth’s surface and crops could not grow.. This eruption was the largest and most destructive event in recorded history. The trek to the summit, while exhausting, is not technically challenging, and most can manage to successfully make it to the summit. The path is well maintained and  there is no steep climbing. The hike starts around 08:00 AM from the Tambora Guesthouse, in the village of Oi Bura, located just above Pancasila. Our route leads us through coffee plantations before connecting to the trail leading to the  National Park. We will have a short rest at Position 1, and then on to Position 2 where we will stop for lunch. We arrive at Position 3 in the late afternoon and make camp for the night. The guide and porters busy themselves setting up the tents and the kitchen. They prepare an early dinner, and everyone retires for the night.

Day 4: Mt Tambora, almost there!
Arise at 02:00AM, have a light meal, and then begin the trek to the summit. We reach the crater rim at 2,630 meters just in time to see the sunrise. The summit is another 92m for those who wish to truly conquer Mt Tambora at 2,722 meters! We return to Position 3 for lunch, and start our way back to the bottom. We collect you in the harbor, and everyone returns back to the comfort of Adelaar! We have a late dinner in a quiet harbor.

Day 5: Moyo Island, Sumbawa
We arrive at Moyo Island late this morning. For the early birds who want to take the adventure to the next level, two dives are possible along the fringing reef outside the main village. In the afternoon, a shore excursion to the nearby waterfall, takes you through the local village and past the school. You may visit the school where the children welcome you to their classroom, and some even practice their English. The walk to the waterfall is down a road lined with ‘living fences’, passing herds of goats and water buffalo. The local guide can point out cashew and teak trees. Once at the waterfall, those daring enough can grab the rope, swing out over the falls and drop into the pool below! We return to the Adelaar and make our way westward towards Bali, sailing through the night. We hope for a majestic sunset over Lombok’s Mt Rinjani.

Day 6: Penida & Lembongan Islands
Arrival early morning in Nusa Penida. We will spend the morning here before all the day boats arrive and go closer to shore to observe the famous Kelingking beach from the sea. A short swim will allow you to step foot on this very special beach which usually can only be reached after a perillary walk on the sharp cliff. Lunch onboard as we make our way across the straight to Bali. Arrival in Serangan in the early afternoon.

Please note that this is a sample itinerary. The actual trip itinerary will vary depending on your requests,  wind and sea conditions, group preferences and the diving experience level of the group. Our dive instructor, together with the captain, will have the final say on the itinerary.
