An unforgettable encounter with the gentle giants of Indonesia
A natural spectacle in a remote Sumbawan bay
Hidden between the islands of Sumbawa and Moyo lies Saleh Bay — an expansive inlet that has quietly become one of Indonesia’s most fascinating locations for whale shark encounters.
Each year, these magnificent creatures gather in the calm waters near traditional fishing platforms known as bagans. The reason? A feast of anchovies, drawn in by bright lights at night — and an accidental buffet for the whale sharks at dawn. This predictable behavior creates an extraordinary opportunity for respectful, close-up interactions, often lasting well over an hour.
Saleh Bay is now a highlight of our Indonesia dive cruise itineraries — one of the few places where you can experience a snorkeling cruise with whale sharks in calm, protected waters, far from the crowds.
Adelaar’s liveaboard expeditions include a special stop here, not only for the chance to swim with the largest fish on Earth, but to witness a rare harmony of nature, tradition, and conservation.
Why do whale sharks gather in Saleh Bay?
Saleh Bay is a vast, sheltered inlet bordered by volcanic ridges and mangrove-lined shores. Nutrient-rich currents make it an ideal feeding ground for plankton and small fish — the primary diet of whale sharks.
The local fishermen have long used floating wooden platforms to fish at night. These bagans attract large schools of anchovies using powerful lamps. At first light, whale sharks arrive to take advantage of the leftovers released from the nets — a behavior that, surprisingly, repeats day after day during the season.
This remarkable interaction between man and marine life has remained respectful and sustainable. Today, it attracts discerning travelers in search of meaningful cruising and snorkeling experiences in Indonesia.
When is the best time to see whale sharks in Sumbawa?
The prime season for sightings runs from April through November, when sea conditions are calm and visibility is optimal. Adelaar’s cruise schedule is carefully designed to pass through Saleh Bay during these months, with visits timed around the new moon for the best chances of interaction.
Thanks to the predictable presence of the bagans and their routines, encounters with multiple individuals are common — often up to four or five whale sharks at once.
A respectful and immersive experience
Encounters typically take place early in the morning, either while snorkeling or scuba diving. The whale sharks, accustomed to the presence of humans near the bagans, are unbothered by calm observers and tend to remain near the surface for extended periods.
Whether you prefer snorkeling from the surface or drifting silently below on scuba, this is one of Indonesia’s most relaxed and rewarding whale shark diving experiences.
Guests are always briefed on how to behave in the water to avoid disturbing the animals. There is no feeding or baiting involved — just a passive observation of a naturally occurring phenomenon.
This approach aligns with Adelaar’s philosophy of low-impact, experience-rich liveaboard cruising.

Beyond whale sharks: exploring Sumbawa’s hidden treasures
While the whale sharks are the star attraction, Saleh Bay and the surrounding waters offer much more. Dramatic landscapes, remote island villages, coral gardens, and occasional sightings of manta rays or dolphins add layers of depth to the voyage.
Our route through Sumbawa is ideal for guests seeking a more immersive snorkeling and diving cruise, blending underwater exploration with rare cultural encounters.
Adelaar works closely with local stakeholders and conservation partners to support a proposed marine protected area (MPA) in Saleh Bay. This initiative, led by Konservasi Indonesia and supported by international institutions, aims to preserve this delicate ecosystem for generations to come.
